In 2006, Svenska kraftnät was notified to the EU Commission by Dansk Energi. It is Svenska kraftnät that operates the Swedish main grid.

In its notification, Dansk Energi protested that Svenska kraftnät periodically limited the export of electricity to Denmark. Among other things, Svenska kraftnät had made the restrictions during cold winter days when the Swedish main grid was not enough to transport electricity from the north to the south of Sweden and on to the European countries that are connected to the south of Sweden. Limiting exports was a way to avoid electricity shortages in the southern parts of the country.

The EU Commission demanded in the spring of 2010 that Swedish Power Grid must handle transmission restrictions in the Swedish main grid in a different way so as not to discriminate against users in other parts of Europe. This resulted in Svenska kraftnät dividing Sweden into four electricity areas on 1 November 2011.

A simple way to find out which area you belong to is to visit Svenska kraftnät's website Nätmården.se - which is an interactive map of the Swedish local network's network areas and electricity areas.
